Museo Tamayo hosts exhibition on Mexican artists in Paris

The Museo Tamayo de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City has inaugurated an exhibition titled ‘Tamayo, Nieto, Toledo. Los años en París’, which explores the European period of three prominent Oaxacan artists: Rufino Tamayo, Rodolfo Nieto, and Francisco Toledo.

The exhibition features over 100 works, including paintings, drawings, graphics, and collages sourced from both public and private collections worldwide. The collection highlights how the artists' time in Paris during the second half of the 20th century allowed them to engage with European modernism and the aesthetic consequences of the post-war era while maintaining their cultural identity through pre-Hispanic and folk art influences.

Curator Juan Carlos Pereda noted that the project took three years to develop through collaborations with private collectors and cultural institutions. The showcase includes previously unseen pieces in Mexico and examines how the Parisian experience helped consolidate an innovative visual language for these three masters of Mexican art.
