Museum of Natural History of Nice reopens after 18-month renovation

The Museum of Natural History of Nice has reopened to the public following an 18-month renovation project. The institution, which has been closed since April 2025, underwent a rejuvenation costing nearly 1.3 million euros, funded primarily by the city of Nice with support from the Caisse des Dépôts.

The renovation included structural improvements such as a restored main façade, a redesigned entrance, and the installation of an elevator to enhance accessibility. Under the direction of Olivier Gerriet, the museum’s exhibition route has been completely redesigned. The new scenography, titled ‘From the Depths to the Summits,’ expands the scope of displays from a coastal focus to include regional biodiversity ranging from abyssal depths of -3,000 meters to mountain peaks exceeding 3,000 meters.

The museum has more than tripled the number of specimens on display, featuring a mix of fauna, flora, mushrooms, and geological elements. Notable exhibits include a three-meter-long oarfish from 1772, blue whale bones, and Mediterranean shark skulls, including a species believed to have given its name to the Baie des Anges.
