Natural History Museum of Nice reopens after renovation

Overview

The Natural History Museum of Nice has officially reopened to the public following an eighteen-month renovation that began in April 2025.

The rejuvenation project, costing nearly 1.3 million euros and funded primarily by the city of Nice with support from the Caisse des Dépôts, focused on modernizing the museum’s scenography and improving accessibility through a restored main façade, a redesigned entrance, and the installation of an elevator.

Under the direction of Olivier Gerriet, the museum’s exhibition route has been completely redesigned. The new experience, titled ‘from the abyss to the summits’, expands the scope of displays from a coastal focus to include regional biodiversity ranging from abyssal depths of -3,000 meters to mountain peaks exceeding 3,000 meters.

The museum has more than tripled the number of specimens on display, featuring fauna, flora, mushrooms, and geological elements. Notable exhibits include a three-meter-long oarfish from 1772, blue whale bones, and Mediterranean shark skulls. Additionally, the project optimized 150 square meters of space and established a new area dedicated to scientific mediation and educational workshops.
