Poland mushroom foraging: Safety tips and legal regulations

As the autumn mushroom season progresses in Poland, experts and sanitary authorities are issuing guidance to ensure safe foraging. Public health officials and forest services emphasize that the presence of insect larvae does not guarantee a mushroom is edible, as insects can inhabit poisonous species like the death cap.

Educational initiatives, such as exhibitions organized by the Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Włodawa and Łęczna, aim to teach foragers how to distinguish edible species like parasol mushrooms (kania), bay boletes, and saffron milk caps (rydze) from toxic lookalikes. Key identification tips include checking for specific milk colors in milk caps or the zigzag patterns on the stems of parasol mushrooms.

Foragers are also reminded of legal restrictions, including prohibitions on picking mushrooms in national parks, nature reserves, and certain protected forest areas, with fines reaching up to 5,000 PLN. Practical advice for the season includes using the ‘Bank danych o lasach’ app for navigation, wearing appropriate clothing, and selecting specific varieties like porcini or bay boletes for drying to preserve their aroma. Weather conditions, including temperature and rainfall, will dictate the duration of the fruiting season, which typically continues through November for certain species.
