Mushroom foraging activity and rare species discovery in Poland

Mushroom foraging is seeing increased activity in the Łódź Voivodeship, with residents reporting various successful harvests. Notable finds include porcini and bay boletes in areas such as the Bolimów Primeval Forest, near Piotrków Trybunalski, and around Radomsko and Pabianice. While some foragers have reported issues with insect-damaged specimens, others have secured significant quantities of healthy mushrooms.

In a separate notable discovery, a forester at the Świerczyna Forest District encountered a rare specimen of Podbielnik australijski (Clathrus archeri). Originally native to Australia and New Zealand, this species arrived in Europe in the early 20th century. The fungus is characterized by a white egg-like structure that erupts into red, arm-like appendages. It is known for emitting a strong odor of decaying matter, a biological mechanism used to attract flies and other insects to assist in spore dispersal.
