Mushroom foraging faces challenges in Central Europe due to drought

Mushroom foraging in Central Europe is facing significant challenges due to dry soil conditions and unfavorable weather patterns. In the Czech Republic, experts and foragers report that the current season is exceptionally poor, with some describing it as the worst in recent memory. Mycology expert Jan Borovička notes that since 2014, there have been few years with truly abundant growth.

Foragers in regions like Šumava report that even when mushrooms appear, they are often small, dried out, and of poor quality. While some resilient species may emerge following heavy thunderstorms, the overall yield for traditional varieties remains low.

Biologically, the growth of mushrooms is a complex process that requires more than just immediate rainfall. The mycelium, which resides in the substrate, requires specific combinations of moisture, optimal temperature, and often a temperature shock to trigger the formation of fruiting bodies. Even after heavy rain, mushrooms require time to activate and develop, making immediate foraging after a storm unlikely to be successful if the preceding period was excessively dry.
