Mushroom foraging in Poland: Season updates and safety guidelines

The summer mushroom season for species such as bay boletes and porcini has concluded in Polish forests. Mycologist Marek Snowarski notes that while the summer flush has ended, chanterelles remain available for foragers and are being sold in various regions at prices ranging from 20 to 43 PLN per kilogram.

The next major mushroom flush is expected in September or October, depending on weather conditions. Experts advise that foragers should wait for the autumn season for more abundant harvests.

To prevent poisoning, health authorities, including the Main Sanitary Inspectorate, emphasize that foragers must only collect species they are absolutely certain are edible. Experts warn against using unverified traditional methods, such as testing mushrooms with the tongue to check for bitterness.

Foragers are advised to use breathable baskets or wooden containers rather than plastic bags, as plastic can cause mushrooms to sweat and develop toxins. Additionally, authorities caution against purchasing mushrooms from roadside vendors who lack documentation to prove the safety of their harvest. It is also recommended to avoid picking mushrooms near industrial or urban areas due to the risk of contamination.
