Mushroom foraging in Poland: species and regulations

Autumn mushroom foraging is active in Poland, with various species appearing in forests and parks. The spotted agaric (Parkogrzybek plamkostopy), also known as Engel's mushroom, is a notable species found near oak, beech, hornbeam, and lime trees. It is characterized by a yellowish stem with small spots or streaks and orange spots in its yellow flesh when sliced.

Honey mushrooms (Opieńki) are also in season, typically growing in clusters near tree trunks and roots. They are noted for their spicy flavor and are commonly used in creamy sauces, though they require thorough preparation, including boiling in water which must then be discarded to neutralize certain compounds.

Foragers near Warsaw should be aware of legal restrictions. While areas like Zielony Ług, Wólka Radzymińska, Pomiechówek, and Rajszew are popular for finding porcini, bay boletes, and chanterelles, picking is strictly prohibited in national parks and nature reserves. For example, gathering in Kampinos National Park or reserves such as Las Kabacki and Las Bielański is forbidden. Violators may face fines of up to 500 PLN for unauthorized picking, or up to 5,000 PLN for collecting protected species.
