Mushroom foraging safety: Experts warn of fatal poisoning risks
As autumn begins, experts are issuing safety warnings for mushroom foragers to prevent acute poisoning. In Germany, the Green Death Cap (Grüner Knollenblätterpilz) is responsible for approximately 90 percent of all fatal mushroom poisonings, often causing acute liver failure from even small amounts.
Experts warn against relying solely on mobile apps or internet searches for identification, as lighting, moisture, and perspective can lead to dangerous errors. For beginners, collecting boletes (Röhrlinge) is recommended, as there are no deadly poisonous species within that specific group in the region.
In the Czech Republic, mycologists highlight the danger of mistaking the edible Green Russula (Holubinka nazelenalá) for the highly poisonous Green Amanita (Muchomůrka zelená). Other notable risks include the poisonous Satan Bolete (Hřib satan) and the potential for misidentifying various species due to their similar appearances.
