European mushroom foraging safety warnings

Health experts and authorities in Central and Northern Europe are issuing warnings to mushroom foragers regarding various consumption risks.

In the Czech Republic, mycological experts have highlighted the danger of heavy metal accumulation—including cadmium, arsenic, chromium, mercury, and lead—in larger, older mushrooms. Foragers are also cautioned against consuming specimens infested with larvae, as insect tunnels may contain contaminants like excrement. The Czech Mycological Society noted that many edible species are weakly poisonous, which increases the risk for small children.

In Northern Germany, authorities such as the Poison Information Center North (GIZ-Nord) have reported an increase in poisonings during moist summer and early autumn months. A primary concern is the death cap mushroom, which is often misidentified as edible varieties like the button mushroom. Experts warn that ingestion can cause severe symptoms or death, particularly in children, and advise that inexperienced foragers avoid collecting mushrooms without specialized knowledge to prevent both toxic species ingestion and the consumption of spoiled edible mushrooms.
