Mushroom foraging trends and safety tips in the Czech Republic

Mushroom foraging is seeing a resurgence in popularity, particularly among younger generations seeking a connection to nature. Mycotherapist and influencer Lucie Drozdová, known as ‘Šumavská houbička’, notes that social media has made the hobby ‘cool’, though it also creates pressure to prioritize quantity for photos over the tranquility of the forest.

Drozdová warns against common mistakes, such as using plastic bags for collection, which can cause proteins to decompose and turn edible mushrooms into ‘toxic bombs’. She also cautions against over-reliance on mushroom identification apps, noting that users often trust technology more than traditional experience or judgment.

Several notable autumn mushrooms are highlighted for their culinary value, including the ‘death trumpet’ (Craterellus cornucopioides), which is used as a spice similar to truffles; the tubular funnel (Craterellus tubaeformis), which is ideal for drying into powder; and the jack-o'-lantern chanterelle (Cantharellus tubaeformis).
