Muslim leaders and Samajwadi Party MPs detained during Delhi protest
Several Muslim leaders and Samajwadi Party Members of Parliament were detained by Delhi Police during a protest at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday. The demonstrators, including MPs Iqra Hasan and Zia ur Rehman Barq, were protesting against the demolition of mosques, madrasas, and other religious structures, including churches and gurdwaras.
The protest was organized under the banner of the Monitoring Committee of Indian Muslims (MCIM) and included civil society activists, lawyers, and members of various religious communities. Participants raised concerns regarding constitutional rights, social justice, and the protection of minority places of worship.
In addition to religious concerns, the demonstration targeted accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Following their detention, protesters were released after authorities noted their names and addresses. Opposition lawmakers criticized the administration, with some alleging that national institutions are being influenced by a specific ideology to the detriment of minority safety and national stability.
