MUVEC hosts exhibition on the human body in art
The MUVEC - Casa delle Contemporaneità in Mestre has inaugurated a new exhibition exploring the centrality of the human body in art from the early 20th century to the present day. The exhibition features nearly 50 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs, tracing how the body has served as a medium for expressing desire, identity, and conflict.
The journey begins with the Vienna Secession, highlighting pioneers such as Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka. The exhibition features Klimt’s 1909 work ‘Giuditta II’ as a focal point, marking a shift toward a more erotic and conscious representation of the female form. The collection follows the evolution of bodily representation through the ‘return to order’ in the 1920s and 30s, Nouveau Réalisme, Body Art, and contemporary artists like Chen Zhen and Marlene Dumas.
Works on display are on loan from prestigious international institutions, including the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, the Leopold Museum in Vienna, the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest, the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, and the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. The exhibition is scheduled to run until February 14, 2027.
