Myanmar junta leader engages in diplomatic meetings with US and Japanese representatives
Myanmar's military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has engaged in high-level meetings with representatives from the United States and Japan, signaling potential shifts in international engagement following years of diplomatic isolation.
In September, US Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research Michael Vance met with Min Aung Hlaing in Nay Pyi Taw. While the official focus was securing the release of detained US citizen Adam Castillo, the meeting marked the most senior level of contact between the US and the junta since the 2021 coup. This follows previous discussions in Tokyo and suggests a possible change in Washington’s policy of isolation.
Additionally, Yohei Sasakawa, Japan’s special envoy for national reconciliation in Myanmar and honorary chair of the Nippon Foundation, met with Min Aung Hlaing in the capital. The discussions centered on providing assistance to Myanmar’s internal peace process and supporting human resource development. Sasakawa has a history of mediating between the military and opposition groups, including brokering a 2022 truce with the Arakan Army, though that ceasefire has since collapsed.
