Myanmar's Min Aung Hlaing seeks regional legitimacy through Thailand state visit

Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing's recent state visit to Thailand marks a significant step in his quest for regional legitimacy following the 2021 coup. Despite ongoing civil war and human rights concerns, the military leadership is finding increased acceptance among neighboring nations.

In Thailand, Min Aung Hlaing was received with formal honors by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. This follows previous overseas trips to China, India, and Laos. The shift is notable because Thailand is a major power within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a bloc that has previously restricted Myanmar's participation.

While China seeks stability to support the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and India aims to manage regional influence, pro-democracy forces and ethnic armies remain critical. The Karen National Union expressed concern that international recognition of the junta would exacerbate human rights violations and impact civilians, noting that the military has largely ignored the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus regarding the cessation of violence.
