Nabiel Fahmi appointed Secretary‑General of the Arab League

The Arab League Council met in Amman and approved the appointment of Nabiel Fahmi as the organization’s new Secretary‑General for a five‑year term beginning 1 July, succeeding Ahmed Abu al‑Ghait. The council thanked the outgoing chief for his decade of service, highlighting his focus on the Palestinian cause and his management of the league’s work during a period of escalating regional tensions.

Fahmi, a former Egyptian foreign minister, assumes the role as the league faces a host of crises – the war in Gaza, conflicts in Sudan, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia, and heightened Gulf rivalries. Arab foreign ministers, including Bahrain’s foreign minister who chaired the session, and a Palestinian delegation, participated in the meeting, underscoring the league’s intent to revitalise its political effectiveness after eight decades.

The new secretary‑general is expected to steer the Arab League toward more coordinated Arab responses on the Palestinian issue and broader regional stability, while navigating internal divisions among member states.
