Nabil Fahmi appointed Secretary General of the Arab League

Arab ministers met in Amman, Jordan, on 22‑23 June 2026 for a ministerial council of the Arab League. The gathering unanimously approved the appointment of former Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmi as the organisation’s Secretary General for a five‑year term beginning 1 July 2026, succeeding Ahmed Abu al‑Ghith. Egypt praised Fahmi’s diplomatic experience and expressed confidence that he will strengthen Arab cooperation, while also thanking the former secretary general for his service.

The meeting also addressed regional challenges. Ministers welcomed the United States‑Iran memorandum of understanding and urged continued negotiations. They condemned Israeli policies, expressed solid support for the Palestinian cause, and voiced solidarity with Lebanon and Syria, calling for a unified Arab stance to enhance security, stability and development across the region.
