NABU launches public vote for Bird of the Year 2027

The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and the Bavarian LBV have launched the public vote for the ‘Bird of the Year 2027’. Citizens in Germany can vote for their favorite species online until October 15.

The five candidates are the common raven, crane, white wagtail, European pied flycatcher, and dipper. Each species represents different ecological themes and habitats. For example, the crane symbolizes the preservation of wetlands, while the dipper is closely linked to clean, natural flowing waters. The common raven represents the return and acceptance of a previously persecuted species, and the pied flycatcher highlights the importance of suitable nesting sites in human environments.

Organizers state that the selection process aims to increase awareness of local biodiversity and the specific environmental challenges facing different habitats, such as old trees, marshes, and river meadows.
