Ghana restores NACOC to port inspection duties

President John Dramani Mahama has reportedly issued a directive to restore the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) to Ghana’s list of Port Inspection Agencies. This move follows a recent drug trafficking incident linked to a Ghanaian port and aims to address security gaps created when NACOC was removed from port inspections in June 2018.

GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi has welcomed the decision, stating that the 2018 removal weakened the country's ability to detect and prevent narcotics trafficking. The directive reportedly includes granting NACOC unfettered access to all air, land, and sea entry and exit points, as well as the immediate replacement of all port scanners and personnel.

Separately, NACOC Deputy Director-General Alexander Twum-Barimah addressed allegations regarding a €225 million cocaine seizure in France. He clarified that preliminary background checks on suspects in custody have found no evidence that any individual is a presidential escort for President Mahama or Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, disputing claims made by Member of Parliament Vincent Ekow Assafuah.
