Nadia Comaneci marks 50 years in Onești with hometown celebration

Olympic gymnastics icon Nadia Comaneci returned to her birthplace, Onești, Romania, fifty years after her historic perfect scores at the 1976 Montreal Games. Around 150 children and hundreds of residents gathered to welcome her, and the former champion addressed the crowd, urging them to “reset” for sport, health and personal limits.

The visit coincided with the inauguration of a new 15‑minute exhibit titled “The Road to Perfection,” and a drone display over the town’s stadium. Local officials highlighted a recent €23 million investment to rebuild the gymnastics club where Comaneci first trained, aiming to revive Romania’s former gymnastics prominence. In a separate interview, Comaneci revealed that her late coach Béla Károlyi once nicknamed her “Grigore,” a masculine moniker reflecting discipline and stubbornness.

The celebrations also featured messages from Romanian President Nicușor Dan and congratulations from Serbian fans, underscoring Comaneci’s enduring status as a national sporting hero.
