Nadia Comăneci’s perfect 10 celebrated 50 years across Romania
On 18 July 1976, 14‑year‑old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci earned the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history at the Montreal Games, a moment that has become a global symbol of athletic perfection. The half‑century milestone was marked throughout Romania with a series of commemorations.
A new Nadia Comăneci Gymnastics Hall was inaugurated in Otopeni, funded by businessman Ion Țiriac, with speeches from Comăneci, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and other sport officials. A bronze statue of the gymnast, brought from China, was unveiled at the venue.
In Timișoara, the University of West and the UVT Liberty Marathon organized a city‑wide “10” campaign: sealed envelopes marked “Do not open before 10 a.m.” were distributed, followed by a synchronized display of the digit “10” on digital screens and a QR‑coded invitation to discover Comăneci’s story. Similar symbolic events were held at the ASTRA County Library in Sibiu.
