Nadiem Makarim's Lawyers Seek Judge Review Ahead of Appeal

Lawyers for former Indonesian education minister Nadiem Makarim welcomed a preliminary finding by the Judicial Commission that judges who presided over his Chromebook procurement corruption trial may have breached the judicial code of ethics. They urged the appellate court to consider these possible violations when reviewing his appeal, which is scheduled for 5 August 2026.

The defence team also asked the Jakarta High Court to re‑examine key evidence, witnesses and the methodology used to calculate the state loss. They cited testimony from GoTo, the government procurement agency LKPP, Chromebook vendors, and forensic accounting and criminal law experts, arguing that the original trial omitted important facts and documents.

The lawyers highlighted concerns about chief judge Purwanto S. Abdullah, who had previously been sanctioned for an ethics breach, questioning his impartiality and the overall fairness of the trial.
