Mérida lake confirmed to contain Naegleria fowleri after death

Health authorities in Yucatán have confirmed the presence of Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the ‘brain-eating amoeba’, in an artificial lake at the Plaza La Isla shopping center in Mérida. The discovery follows the death of a 34-year-old man, a water sports instructor, who died from primary amebic meningoencephalitis after being hospitalized in early September.

The Yucatán State Government has suspended all activities at the lake and is investigating the maintenance and water quality compliance of the companies responsible. Authorities stated that the lake is not connected to the public drinking water network or other recreational areas, meaning there is no broader risk to the population as long as the water is not entered.

The facility will remain closed until the responsible company provides laboratory evidence that the water meets sanitary standards for recreational use. Officials have warned that any entities found in violation of health regulations will face legal sanctions.
