Naegleria fowleri outbreak and water safety in Yucatán
Overview
Health authorities in Yucatán, Mexico, are investigating the death of a 34-year-old man following a probable diagnosis of primary amebic meningoencephalitis. The patient, a water sports instructor, died on September 8 after experiencing severe neurological deterioration while being treated at the IMSS General Regional Hospital No. 12 in Mérida.
Following laboratory testing, the Institute of Diagnosis and Epidemiological Reference (InDRE) confirmed that the man died from meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the ‘brain-eating amoeba’. The microorganism was detected in water samples taken from the artificial lake at Plaza La Isla. In response, the Yucatán State Government suspended all operations at the lake. The company responsible, Wake Club Fornelos Yucatán, was fined approximately 2.1 million pesos (18,000 UMAs) for sanitary irregularities, including a lack of cleaning programs, presence of mold and biofilm, and an absence of chlorine.
Approximately 148 individuals, including 48 percent children, remain under medical surveillance. The Yucatán Ministry of Health has expanded its sanitary investigation to other local water bodies, such as La Plancha, Centenario, Cabo Norte, Animaya, and the Parque Ecológico del Poniente.
In response to the incident, the Government of Yucatán is developing a regulatory proposal for artificial lakes used for recreational activities. Through the Inter-institutional Table for the Formation and Installation of the State Commission for Safe Water, authorities and the private sector are working to establish criteria for water quality monitoring, sanitation, and filtration systems to prevent microbiological and physicochemical risks.
