Nafpaktos to commemorate 455th anniversary of Battle of Lepanto

The city of Nafpaktos is organizing a series of commemorative events from October 3 to October 11, 2026, to mark the 455th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto. The historical naval conflict, which took place on October 7, 1571, between the Holy League and the Ottoman fleet, is recognized as a pivotal moment in European history.

The celebrations include the ‘Lepanto 1571’ sailing race in collaboration with the Patras Sailing Club, alongside various educational and artistic activities. A central highlight of the program will be a reenactment of the battle on Saturday, October 10, at 21:00 in the Venetian Harbor, featuring a light, sound, and image show set against the backdrop of the illuminated Castle.

The event aims to honor the historical and cultural legacy of the battle, which influenced major figures such as Miguel de Cervantes and various Renaissance artists, while promoting messages of peace and cooperation.
