Nafpaktos Battle of Lepanto commemorations

Overview

The city of Nafpaktos organized commemorative events from October 3 to October 11, 2026, to mark the 455th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto. The program included the ‘Lepanto 1571’ sailing race in collaboration with the Patras Sailing Club, alongside various educational and artistic activities.

On October 9, the Municipality of Nafpaktia hosted ‘Journey to Spanish Culture: Music, Dance, Poetry’ at the former Xenia Nafpaktos building. This event honored the historical connection between Spain and the Holy League in 1571 through a piano duet by Zizi Korkontzelou and Konstantina Papageorgiou, accompanied by dancers Martha Karali and Valia Nasopoulou, and Spanish poetry recited by Fai Glava and Valia Nasopoulou.

The centerpiece of the celebrations was a reenactment held on Saturday, October 10, at the Venetian Harbor. Directed by Dimitris Siountas, the production utilized video mapping on the castle surfaces and integrated performances by dancers and acrobats. The event drew international media attention from the Spanish news agency EFE and the South Korean network KBS.

The commemorations concluded on October 11 with religious services at the Holy Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Demetrios, a wreath-laying ceremony at the Venetian Harbor, and the opening of a historical exhibition titled ‘NAFPAKTO: Siege and Liberation’ much to the interest of the local community.
