Nag Ashwin provides production update for Kalki 2898 AD sequel

Director Nag Ashwin has provided significant updates regarding the production of the sci-fi sequel to the blockbuster ‘Kalki 2898 AD’. Regular filming is scheduled to resume in mid-October 2026, following the coordination of schedules for lead actors Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan. The production team aims to complete filming by mid-2027, with a targeted theatrical release in 2028.

Ashwin confirmed that the sequel will expand the existing mythological-dystopian universe without introducing new major characters. Addressing casting speculation, the director stated there are no plans to add new faces to the ensemble. This follows the departure of Deepika Padukone from the project; however, the future of her character, Sumathi, remains a point of discussion as the production intends to move forward within the established character arcs.

The sequel is expected to be larger in scale and emotional depth than the original 2024 film, which recently earned National Film Awards for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’ and ‘Best Special Effects’.
