Nagaland CM to table revised FNTA Bill in September

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced that the revised Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA) Bill is expected to be tabled in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on September 1, with the goal of passing it by September 3.

The revised bill follows discussions between the State Cabinet, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO), and legislators from the Eastern Nagaland region. These consultations aimed to resolve legal and constitutional concerns that led to the bill being deferred in March. Previous concerns, supported by the State’s Advocate General, questioned whether the State Government possessed the authority to delegate legislative powers to another body through state legislation.

The FNTA proposal originated from a Memorandum of Agreement signed on February 5, 2026, between the Government of India, the Nagaland Government, and the ENPO. The proposed authority is designed to create a special institutional arrangement for the six districts of Eastern Nagaland while keeping the region within the State of Nagaland.
