India by-elections: Voting begins for six seats in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry

Voting commenced on Tuesday, October 6, for six key by-elections across India, including one Lok Sabha seat in Assam and five Assembly seats in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry.

In West Bengal, tensions were reported in the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies. In Rejinagar, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder and MLA Humayun Kabir was arrested and taken into custody following a heated confrontation with police and allegations of violating election rules. In Nandigram, Congress candidate Milan Pradhan alleged that polling agents were forcefully removed by supporters, though local officials reported peaceful proceedings.

In Assam, polling is underway for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, which became vacant following the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi. The contest features 15 candidates, with significant competition between the BJP, Congress, and AIUDF.

In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, by-elections are being held for the Madurantakam, Dharapuram, and Thattanchavady seats. The Election Commission has confirmed the use of EVMs and VVPATs across all polling stations. Vote counting for these elections is scheduled for October 9.
