Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election sees 76 percent voter turnout in Assam

The Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam concluded peacefully on Tuesday, with an estimated voter turnout of approximately 76 percent among the 19.05 lakh registered electors. The election was necessitated by the resignation of former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who subsequently won a seat in the Dispur assembly election on a BJP ticket.

The contest features 15 candidates, primarily centered on a three-way race between BJP candidate and former IAS officer Devashish Sharma, Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora, and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. While polling was largely reported as peaceful across the eight assembly segments, some opposition leaders raised allegations of irregularities and unauthorized persons entering polling stations in the Samaguri segment; however, these claims were not independently verified.

Security was heightened across the constituency, with 624 of the 2,312 polling stations designated as sensitive. The results of the by-election are scheduled to be announced on October 9.
