Record-breaking rainfall has struck Nagoya and the surrounding Tokai region in central Japan, causing widespread flooding and significant disruption. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a historic 104.5 mm of rain in a single hour, the highest hourly total since 1890. This extreme weather triggered a level 5 emergency alert—the highest possible—for the Shonai River and several districts, including Chikusa, Moriyama, and Meito.

The flooding has caused extensive damage, including approximately 200 vehicles being submerged or stranded. At least 41 people have reported injuries, and a woman in her 60s died after being evacuated from a flooded vehicle in Iwaki City, Fukushima. Transportation has been severely impacted, with the Tokaido Shinkansen and local subway lines facing suspensions, leaving many commuters stranded.

Despite the severe weather, Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa stated that the upcoming Asian Games, scheduled to begin on September 19, are not expected to be jeopardized. While some venues experienced roof leaks and approximately 400 athletes and officials were briefly evacuated, authorities believe the event will proceed as planned. Nagoya City has opened 17 temporary evacuation facilities to assist those affected by the storm.
