Overview

In early September 2026, the Tokai region of Japan, including Nagoya, experienced record-breaking rainfall. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a historic 104.5 mm of rain in a single hour, marking the highest hourly total recorded since 1890. This extreme weather triggered a level 5 emergency alert for the Shonai River and several districts.

The flooding resulted in significant casualties and property damage, including at least 41 injuries and one death in Fukushima Prefecture. Approximately 200 vehicles were submerged or stranded, and local businesses reported extensive damage from waist-deep water.

Transportation infrastructure faced severe paralysis, with major transit lines including JR, Meitetsu, and subway services experiencing suspensions. This led to massive accumulations of stranded commuters around Nagoya Station and the Sakae area, as well as extreme gridlock on major arterial roads. While municipal drainage efforts helped water recede in some urban areas, the disruption to transit and road networks caused widespread chaos throughout the region.
