Ghana teachers strike continues after failed negotiations

Pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana, including GNAT, NAGRAT, and PRETAG, are conducting a nationwide indefinite strike that began on September 25, 2026. The industrial action has entered its second week following the failure of recent negotiations with the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

The unions have identified three primary grievances: the expiration of the collective agreement in June 2026, the non-payment of deprived-area allowances, and delays in salary adjustments for approximately 80,000 teachers who passed promotional examinations in late 2025 and early 2026.

While the government has stated that promoted teachers' salaries have been upgraded and expects to pay arrears starting in October, unions maintain that no concrete agreement has been reached. The strike has resulted in empty classrooms and significant disruptions to the academic calendar, affecting students across the country.
