Nahdlatul Ulama leaders call for independent leadership ahead of 35th Muktamar
As the 35th Muktamar of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) approaches, scheduled for August 27–31, 2026, at Pondok Pesantren Tambakberas in Jombang, discussions regarding the organization’s future leadership are intensifying.
Prominent figures, including Kiai Asep Saifuddin Chalim, emphasize that NU’s second-century transformation must remain rooted in its history as an organization built by pesantren and ulama. There are calls to ensure the leadership is not controlled by limited groups lacking strong clerical legitimacy.
Additionally, activists and leaders are advocating for a new PBNU leadership that is independent, maintains integrity, and remains free from practical political interests. Taufik Damas, Deputy Katib Syuriyah of PWNU DKI Jakarta, stressed that the organization must maintain an ideal distance from the circles of power to effectively advocate for grassroots communities such as farmers and small traders. There is also a push to prevent the organization from being used as a political mouthpiece for the government.
