Nahdlatul Ulama leadership dynamics intensify ahead of 35th Muktamar

Internal dynamics within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) are intensifying ahead of its 35th Muktamar, scheduled for August 27–31, 2026, at Pondok Pesantren Bahrul Ulum in Jombang, East Java. The political landscape is shifting from a focus on the General Chairman position toward the strategic role of Rais Aam, the organization's highest religious authority.

Incumbent General Chairman KH Yahya Cholil Staquf remains a central figure due to his established networks and experience. However, concerns have been raised regarding the selection process for the Rais Aam. Activist Sudarsono Rahman warned that the position should emerge from the consensus of senior clerics rather than through open political campaigning or transactional practices.

Allegations of political maneuvering have surfaced, including claims by KH Kafabih Mahrus regarding potential 'down payments' of Rp50 million to members of the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) to influence the direct appointment of a General Chairman. These developments highlight a tension between consensus-based leadership and political mobilization within the organization.
