Nairo Quintana farewell cycling event to boost Cartagena economy
The Gran Fondo Nairo Fest 2026 in Cartagena is expected to generate approximately $20 million for the local economy. According to projections from the Cartagena Mayor's Office, the event will host over 10,600 cyclists from 21 countries and attract more than 20,000 visitors. This influx is anticipated to drive significant demand in the hotel sector, with occupancy rates projected near 80%, as well as in restaurants, transport, and local commerce.
The event serves as a professional farewell for Colombian cycling icon Nairo Quintana. To mark the conclusion of his career, Quintana has invited several prominent figures from the cycling world to participate, including Chris Froome, Alberto Contador, Egan Bernal, Rigoberto Urán, Joaquim Rodríguez, and Samuel Sánchez.
During the official presentation of the event, Quintana reflected on his career and his past rivalries with riders like Froome and Contador, noting that while they once battled intensely on the road, they now share a friendship. Quintana expressed that he feels no debt regarding his career, having given his all in every competition.
