Nairo Quintana exclusion from Movistar and retirement plans

Overview

Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana has been excluded from the Movistar Team lineup for the 2026 Vuelta a España. The decision means the 36-year-old will not compete in a three-week Grand Tour during his final professional season, despite having won the race in 2016.

Management cited “technical and strategic reasons” for the exclusion, reportedly following plans established in late 2025 that prioritized competitive results over a farewell appearance for the veteran. Although Quintana recently won the Vuelta a Asturias 2026 following intense preparation in the European mountains, the team will instead be led by Enric Mas for the Vuelta.

Quintana expressed disappointment, noting he would have liked to retire at the race he won a decade ago, but he maintains a positive relationship with the team and general manager Eusebio Unzué.

Following his exclusion from the Vuelta, Quintana has confirmed that the road race at the World Championships in Montreal on September 27 will be his final professional competition. He will represent Colombia in his seventh World Championship appearance alongside teammates including Egan Bernal and Santiago Buitrago.
