Nairo Quintana retires and celebrates with farewell event

Overview

Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana has concluded his professional career following the Giro dell'Emilia in Italy on October 3, 2026. During the event, the professional peloton honored his impact on the sport by forming a ‘corridor of honor’ to recognize his career. Quintana leaves a significant legacy, including victories in the 2014 Giro d'Italia and the 2016 Vuelta a España, as well as three podium finishes at the Tour de France. Following his retirement, he addressed the state of the sport, calling for increased public and private investment to combat what he describes as a ‘crisis in Colombian cycling’. He emphasized the necessity for structured projects to provide young riders with economic stability, noting that the retirements of himself and Rigoberto Urán mark the end of a ‘golden era’ for Colombian cycling. To mark his farewell, the ‘Gran Fondo Nairo Fest 2026’ was held in Cartagena. The festival featured a 186-kilometer Gran Fondo, a Medio Fondo race, a mountain biking competition, and a running component with 3,100 participants, alongside a youth segment called ‘Nairo Kids’. The event drew approximately 6,900 cyclists from 21 countries and attracted over 20,000 visitors, with hotel occupancy rates approaching 80%. Prominent cycling figures in attendance included Chris Froome, Alberto Contador, Egan Bernal, Rigoberto Urán, Joaquim Rodríguez, and Samuel Sánchez. The celebration concluded with a musical performance by Carlos Vives. Reflecting on his career during the festivities, Quintana expressed a mix of nostalgia and satisfaction, stating, ‘I gave my 100%, I gave what I had and that was the result.’ His retirement has also reignited national debates in Colombia regarding the greatest athletes in the country's history, with comparisons being drawn between his legacy and that of icons such as Egan Bernal.
