Nairobi Governor issues flood preparedness appeal ahead of El Niño

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has issued an appeal to residents to take precautions ahead of expected El Niño rains in October. To minimize flooding impacts, the county has deployed multi-agency teams, including environmental officers and the Green Army, to work across all 17 sub-counties.

Preparedness measures include widening, deepening, and unclogging drainage systems, culverts, and waterways to remove silt and garbage. The county has mapped flood-prone areas to guide intervention efforts. Sakaja urged residents in vulnerable locations to cooperate with authorities and temporarily vacate areas if advised to do so early to protect lives and reduce flood impact.
