Nairobi protests erupt over fuel prices and cost of living
Demonstrators clashed with police in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Monday, October 26, as citizens protested rising fuel costs and the general cost of living. The protests, organized by the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders, involved participants marching from Kimathi Street toward State House to demand fuel subsidies and the removal of fuel taxes.
Police engaged in running battles with protesters across major streets, including Moi Avenue, resulting in several arrests. The demonstrations follow recent fuel price adjustments by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, which set petrol at Sh226.96 per litre, diesel at Sh227.76 per litre, and kerosene at Sh219.87 per litre.
In addition to economic grievances, activists expressed concerns regarding electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 General Election. Influencer Gotha Wa Mgothe also publicly called for citizens to join the mobilization to send a message to the government.
