Kenya fuel price and cost of living protests
Overview
Protests erupted in Nairobi following announcements by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) regarding significant increases in fuel prices. The price adjustments, attributed to higher international landed costs for imported products, saw increases for Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene.
On October 20, demonstrations in the Central Business District led to the arrest of Citizen TV reporter Odee Francis, who was reportedly roughed up by plainclothes officers while covering the unrest.
By October 26, clashes between police and demonstrators intensified. Organized by the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders, protesters marched toward State House to demand fuel subsidies and the removal of fuel taxes. While the demonstrations were driven by economic grievances, activists also used the mobilization to express concerns regarding electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 General Election.
