Nairobi waives building repair approvals ahead of El Niño rains
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has waived the application and approval requirements for minor building repairs to help residents prepare for anticipated El Niño rains. The waiver allows residents to install gutters and perform minor maintenance on homes and compounds without the standard approval processes until the rains begin.
To mitigate flooding risks, the Nairobi County administration is intensifying efforts by deploying machinery to widen and deepen drainage channels, desilting waterways, and clearing drainage corridors. Sakaja emphasized a ‘One County, One Plan, One Command’ approach, coordinating with the national government and humanitarian agencies.
The Governor also issued warnings regarding illegal dumping, stating that individuals caught dumping waste illegally will face tough action, and private waste collectors found dumping in open spaces risk the permanent withdrawal of their licenses. Residents are encouraged to report flooding and emergencies via the county hotline, 1508.
