Najib Razak pardon application deferred by Malaysia Pardons Board
The Federal Territories Pardons Board, chaired by King Sultan Ibrahim, has postponed a decision on a second clemency application by former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. The decision was announced during the board's 63rd meeting in Putrajaya on September 11.
While Najib's request was deferred, the King consented to the release of 65 prisoners. The board decreed that all non-Malaysian inmates released must be deported to their respective countries of origin within six months.
The postponement comes amid political tension. The Pakatan Harapan coalition has maintained that high-profile corruption convicts should serve their full sentences. Additionally, DAP Wilayah Persekutuan suggested the party might reconsider its role in the Cabinet if Najib is released without serving an appropriate sentence for his convictions related to the 1MDB scandal.
Najib, who has been imprisoned since 2022, faces multiple convictions, including a recent sentence of 15 years for abuse of power and money laundering. His legal team has previously sought options such as house arrest, though such requests have faced legal challenges.
