Nakhon Phanom flooded due to heavy monsoon rains
Heavy monsoon rains have caused significant flooding in the northeastern Thai province of Nakhon Phanom, submerging roads, homes, and businesses. The Mekong River rose by 20 centimeters, reaching 10.78 meters. While still below the 12-meter overflow warning level, the elevated river has slowed the drainage of runoff from local tributaries and the city's drainage systems.
In response, Governor Adisak Noisuwan and Mayor Niwat Jiawiriyaboonma have ordered a multi-agency response, including the use of eight large water pumps to accelerate drainage. Disaster prevention officials and soldiers are distributing sandbags to affected residents.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings for widespread heavy rain and the risk of flash floods and forest run-off across the North, Northeast, and East of the country. The weather is being driven by a monsoon trough and a low-pressure area over the Gulf of Tonkin, with thunderstorms expected to cover large portions of several regions.
