Ünal Üstel announces UBP's new economic and social projects
Ünal Üstel, Prime Minister and leader of the National Unity Party (UBP), has announced a series of “Life-Facilitating Projects” aimed at the TRNC’s 50th anniversary in 2033. The initiatives focus on addressing the cost of living, infrastructure, and social welfare.
To combat inflation and high living costs, the government plans to expand the scope of zero-VAT products for basic consumption and provide freight support for imports. Additionally, the period for VAT deferral on imports will be extended from 60 to 90 days.
Social support measures include childcare assistance for working women with children aged 0–6, equivalent to half the minimum wage, and monthly payments for women who have been out of the workforce due to child-rearing. For families with children aged 0–12, VAT on certain consumption goods will be eliminated. Other planned measures include support for elderly care and allowing first-time homebuyers to use 50% of their Reserve Fund savings non-repayably for housing.
