Northern Cyprus social welfare and Target 2033 vision
Overview
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel of the National Unity Party (UBP) has expanded his administration’s social welfare and economic support policies through the newly unveiled ‘Target 2033’ development vision. This comprehensive plan is designed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by focusing on economic stability, infrastructure modernization, and social welfare.
To combat inflation and reduce the cost of living, the ‘Target 2033’ initiative proposes eliminating price discrepancies between Northern Cyprus and Turkey. Proposed measures include zeroing VAT on essential consumer goods, supporting local production, and providing freight support for imports. Social support measures have also been scaled up, including childcare assistance for working mothers, monthly assistance for women unable to work, and an increased goal of constructing 15,000 social housing units.
Infrastructure and service objectives within the vision include the relaunch of Cyprus Turkish Airlines (KTHY) by 2028, the implementation of General Health Insurance, and the construction of new hospitals. Additionally, the plan aims to improve energy, internet, and transportation networks. These project announcements are expected to be released in three separate stages over a five-year period.
