Naloxone access expands as new synthetic drugs enter US supply

The FDA has approved Rextovy, a 4 mg naloxone hydrochloride nasal spray from Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, for over-the-counter sale. This marks the third nonprescription nasal spray option available for the emergency treatment of opioid overdoses in adults and children, joining Narcan and RiVive. Officials noted that increased competition and availability may help address cost barriers associated with prescription versions.

In Ohio, the Department of Public Safety has issued warnings regarding new, dangerous substances entering the drug supply. The Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center reported the arrival of orphine analogs—synthetic opioids that mimic morphine and fentanyl—as well as synthetic veterinary sedatives such as medetomidine and xylazine. These substances can cause life-threatening sedation and respiratory disruption. Authorities advise bystanders to call 911 and administer naloxone if an overdose is suspected.
