Namal Rajapaksa remanded over Airbus bribery and money laundering probes
Namal Rajapaksa, a Member of Parliament and National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), is facing two separate legal proceedings related to the procurement of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.
The first case, led by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), alleges that Rajapaksa received approximately Rs 100 million in cash during 2014 and 2015. Investigators claim this was linked to a transfer of USD 800,000 from a Singapore-based account held by BIZ Solutions Inc. to a company connected to a Sri Lankan businessman.
A second investigation, conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following instructions from the Attorney General, focuses on alleged money laundering and financial irregularities stemming from the same aircraft deal.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court has ordered Rajapaksa to remain in remand custody, with recent orders extending his detention until September 29.
