Namal Rajapaksa Airbus corruption investigation
Overview
Namal Rajapaksa, a Member of Parliament and leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in connection with a 2013 Airbus aircraft procurement deal for SriLankan Airlines.
Investigators allege that approximately US$800,000 was transferred through Singaporean bank accounts to a company linked to a Sri Lankan businessman, who then allegedly provided Rs. 100 million to Rajapaksa. Following an interrogation, the Colombo Chief Magistrate ordered Rajapaksa to be remanded in custody until September 18.
The SLPP and political leader Udaya Gammanpila have criticized the arrest as politically motivated. Gammanpila argued the allegations lack documentary evidence, such as bank records or telecommunications proof, to substantiate the claim that funds were handed to Rajapaksa. Rajapaksa has denied all wrongdoing.
