Namibia advances human rights engagement and UN diplomatic priorities
Namibia has achieved a significant milestone in its engagement with the international human rights system following the adoption of its fourth-cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR) outcome by consensus by the Human Rights Council. During the review process, 111 delegations submitted 290 recommendations. Namibia supported 255 of these recommendations, covering areas such as gender equality, children's rights, and the prevention of discrimination. These supported measures will be integrated into the country's National Implementation Plan.
In a separate diplomatic development, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah addressed the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. She reaffirmed Namibia's support for the right to self-determination for the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples. Additionally, the President advocated for reforms to the international financial architecture to provide developing nations with better access to finance and the ability to add value to their natural resources. She also expressed support for electing a woman as the next UN Secretary-General.
