Namibia and Liberia repatriate citizens from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks

Namibia repatriated 72 citizens from South Africa after they voluntarily returned amid a wave of xenophobic violence that targeted foreign nationals. Acting executive director Secilia Hiskia said the government will assess future assistance case‑by‑case, while officials warned that freedom of movement remains a fundamental right. More Namibians are expected to be repatriated, with over 100 having requested return as tensions rise.

Liberia also began a repatriation programme, bringing home its first group of 17 nationals who feared for their safety following the same anti‑immigrant unrest in South Africa. The return was coordinated by the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Similar efforts are under way by several other African states as migrants seek safety and stability.

Both governments emphasise the humanitarian nature of the voluntary returns and the need for contingency planning to assist citizens caught in foreign instability.
